Subtitles for your YouTube videos
Create an SRT file from your video, fix any word, then upload it in YouTube Studio. Viewers can turn captions on, and YouTube can read your words.
- Your file never leaves your device
- No sign-up, no minute limits, no watermark
- Around 100 languages, with translation to English
This is a large file. It may take a long time, and phones can run out of memory. If it stops, try a shorter clip or use a computer.

Why add your own subtitles
YouTube's automatic captions often get names and terms wrong. A corrected subtitle file reads better, helps viewers watching without sound, and gives YouTube an accurate text of your video.
Upload the file to YouTube
In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video, add the language, then choose Upload file, With timing, and pick the SRT. There's a full walkthrough in our guide to adding subtitles to YouTube.

Questions
Will the subtitles be burned into the video?
No. An uploaded SRT stays a separate track that viewers can turn on and off. To put captions on the video itself, use Add subtitles to video.
Can I make subtitles in another language?
Yes. Make an SRT in the spoken language, or choose Translate to English.
Does it work for Shorts?
Yes. For vertical videos, set shorter lines, around 26 characters.
